Recent credits include a highly successful Italian debut conducting Pier Luigi Pizzi’s new production of Ades’ Powder her Face at Teatro Comunale di Bologna and at the Lugo Festival, returning to Italy to conduct further performances with La Fenice in Venice. In addition he conducted performances of music by Gershwin with Jean-Yves Thibaudet for the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini and will work again with them in their 2012-2013 season.

Philip Walsh is currently music director of the opera festival Lyrique-en-Mer, on Belle-Ile in Brittany.  He has conducted more than 100 performances for the festival, including RigolettoCosì fan tutteToscaFalstaffDon GiovanniDido and AeneasDon PasqualeLa BohèmeCarmenDie ZauberflöteMadama ButterflyLe Nozze di FigaroOrphée et EurydiceLa Traviata and Les Contes d’Hoffmann as well as Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Gounod’s Messe de Sainte Cecile and Mozart's Requiem.  He returns to Belle-Ile in 2012 for Otello and La Cenerentola.

His performances elsewhere have included Peter Brook’s La Tragédie de Carmen (Opéra de Bordeaux), Thomas Adès’s Powder her Face (Opéra de Metz), La Bohème (English Touring Opera), Britten’s Death in Venice (Metz), and the premiere of Jürgen Simpson’s Thwaite (Almeida Opera), the first prize winner of the inaugural Genesis Opera Project. He performed in the 2006 Aldeburgh Festival, conducting the premiere of Emily Hall’s opera Sante, and in 2007 he made his Spanish debut, conducting Don Giovanni for Opera en Vigo. He has worked with orchestras such as the London SinfoniettaCity Chamber Orchestra of Hong KongFilarmonica Arturo Toscaninil’Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Born in Southampton, Philip Walsh studied piano and organ and went on to study at Cambridge University. After graduating he spent a number of years in New Zealand, where he was a regular guest conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, with whom he recorded a number of programmes of new music for radio broadcast.  He was also conductor of the Orpheus Choir of Wellington, conducting them in performances of Stravinsky’s Les Noces, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Tippett A Child of our Time, Orff Carmina Burana, Verdi’s Requiem and Bach Mass in B minor. He is a passionate advocate of new music and has commissioned and conducted numerous premiere performances.
