Barnaby Palmer is the current Music Director of the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra following his successful debut there in March 2013. Also in China he is the Resident Conductor of the SHIYO Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai and Principal Guest Conductor of the Harbin Symphony Orchestra. Since 2002 Barnaby has held the position of Artistic Director at San Francisco Lyric Opera and has conducted over 35 new productions with that organisation.

Current and future engagements include Un ballo in maschera Szeged Open-air Festival and concerts in China with Zhejiang Symphony, Shenyang Symphony Orchestra, Harbin Symphony Orchestra, Nanning Symphony and Shanghai International Youth Orchestra.

Recent engagements include Barnaby’s Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra debut conducting two different programs during Spring Festival, Les Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble on tour, a return to Den Fynske Opera to conduct the world-premiere of Dr. Jekylls advokat, an opera by Niels Marthinsen and Orquestra Simfonica de Barcelona.

Barnaby has also appeared in concert with American Philharmonic and La Crosse Symphony Orchestra and as assistant conductor for the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Other operatic engagements include conducting for, Opera San Jose, Livermore Opera, The Crucible and Bohemian Opera.     

Barnaby has received critical acclaim both as an orchestral and operatic conductor. Born in Hong Kong and raised in the Bay Area, Barnaby studied at Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Michigan. He has studied conducting with Alan Gilbert, Rossen Milanov, Larry Rachleff and Michael Morgan.
