A major stage personality noted for his incisive and provocative interpretations, Louis Otey performs with leading theatres throughout the world. Recent engagements include SCARPIA, ESCAMILLO, DON GIOVANNI and GERMONT for the New York City Opera, SCARPIA for Portland Opera, DON GIOVANNI for the New Orleans Opera, Cleveland Opera and Connecticut Grand Opera, FIGARO (Barbiere) for Fort Worth Opera, DANILO for Baltimore, the COUNT for Detroit, the PHILOSOPHER Cherubin at L’Opéra de Monte Carlo, IAGO Otello and ENRICO Lucia di Lammermoor with the Cincinnati Opera, EISENSTEIN in New Orleans, the world première of Conquistador ESCAMILLO for the San Diego Opera and Pittsburg, Doña Francisquita with the Washington Opera, MARCELLO and RENATO for the Fort Worth Opera and Hawaii Opera, the FOUR VILLAINS Hoffmann for Houston Grand Opera and DE BRETIGNY Manon for San Francisco Opera and BELCORE L’Elisir d’Amore for the Canadian Opera Company.

In September 2000 he achieved enormous critical and public success as EL CONDE CENCI in Alberto Ginastera’s Beatrix Cenci for Geneva Opera. Most recently he sang IAGO for Opéra de Nantes, The Gambler for the Metropolitan Opera, RENATO Ballo in Maschera for the Washington Opera and CARLOS La Forza del Destino in Rouen, RIGOLETTO for Opera Pacific and New York City Opera, EISENSTEIN at the Metropolitan Opera, ESCAMILLO for the Israel Philharmonic under Frühbeck de Burgos and the title role in Le Roi Arthus at Théâtre de la Monnaie, Bruxelles, SHARPLESS for Portland Opera and ATHANAEL Thais for Rome Opera. Future plans include CARBON Cyrano de Bergerac, the title role in Falstaff and EISENSTEIN all at the Metropolitan Opera. Other highlights include the title role in Eugene Onegin (his European début) in Basel, the COUNT Le Nozze di Figaro in Lyon, Dϋsseldorf, Opera Hamilton and Calgary Opera, FORD Falstaff in Basel and ZURGA Les Pêcheurs de Perles in Chautauqua.

Louis Otey has performed EISENSTEIN Die Fledermaus at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, which was televised worldwide on the occasion of Joan Sutherland’s retirement from the stage. Other roles include DANDINI La Cenerentola at the Paris Opera and Aix en Provence, the FOUR VILLAINS Les Contes d’Hoffmann for San Diego Opera, SHARPLESS Madama Butterfly for the Washington, New Orleans, Michigan and Cincinnati Operas.

A noted interpreter of Menotti’s music, he has performed JOHN SOREL The Consul for the Teatro Verdi, Trieste, Edinburgh International Festival and at the Spoleto Festival, Italy. DONATO/Maria Golovin for the Greek National Opera and the Spoleto Festival (USA), the three male roles in La Loca for the Spoleto Festival, the title role in The Last Savage and the world première of Goya at the Kennedy Center, telecast live on PBS.
