Artistic Director of The Buxton Festival, and one of the most popular conductors in the United Kingdom, Andrew Greenwood’s recent credits include La Bohème and La Traviata, both in new productions for Welsh National Opera, Albert Herring at the New National Theatre, Tokyo, Luisa Miller and the award-winning Roberto Devereux (both directed by Stephen Medcalf), at the Buxton Festival. Highlights of his future operatic schedule include Aida for Raymond Gubbay at the Royal Albert Hall in 2012, and he returns to WNO to co-conduct Die Fledermaus in 2011.

Born in Yorkshire he read music at Clare College, Cambridge, going on to join the Music Staff of the Royal Opera, Covent Garden from 1977 – 1984. He was subsequently appointed Chorus Master at Welsh National Opera (a post he held until 1990) conducting, most notably Don Giovanni, Carmen, Tosca, Rigoletto, Otello, The Trojans, Fidelio, Salome, and Der Rosenkavalier. In 1990 he made his début at English National Opera with The Magic Flute, and has since conducted Madam Butterfly, Don Giovanni and a new production of Don Pasquale.
His international engagements have included First Conductor at Oper der Stadt, Köln, where his many performances included Rigoletto, Die Zauberflöte, Hänsel und Gretel, Faust, Der Wildschutz and The Bartered Bride. In addition he enjoyed a highly-successful period with The Royal Danish Opera from his debut with Così fan tutte and performances of Carmen, Seraglio, and Barber of Seville, to the critically-acclaimed new production of Britten’s Albert Herring in 1995 – 1996. Andrew returned to Copenhagen for performances of Madama Butterfly and Don Giovanni and in the spring of 1998 he conducted Turandot for the company.
In 1995, Andrew Greenwood was appointed Music Director of English Touring Opera where he has conducted some of their most successful productions notably L'Elisir d'Amore, La Boheme, Werther, The Pearl Fishers, The Marriage of Figaro, La Cenerentola, The Daughter of the Regiment and Macbeth, which opened to considerable musical acclaim. For Chelsea Opera Group he has conducted concert performances of Mefistofele, Manon Lescaut, Gwendoline and most recently, a rare concert performance of Verdi’s Jerusalem at the South Bank Centre, London.
He has conducted many of the major symphony orchestras in Britain including The Philharmonia, The Royal Philharmonic, The City of London Sinfonia, The Ulster Orchestra and The English Northern Sinfonia. He is a frequent broadcaster for The BBC with The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and The BBC Concert Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and regular appearances with The International Istanbul Music Festival. Recent engagements include ballet performances with The Royal Danish Opera, Copenhagen, concerts with The Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra, L’Elisir d’Amore and Così fan Tutte in Copenhagen, The Rake’s Progress, Manon and La Traviata for English Touring Opera, Carmina Burana at the Royal Albert Hall, opera gala concerts in Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham and London and performances of Iphigénie en Tauride for WNO. More recently, Andrew has conducted La Perichole, Donizetti's Maria Padilla and Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Buxton Festival and in 2006 was appointed as the Festival’s new Artistic Director. Other recent successes have included Der Wildschϋtz for The Buxton Festival, as well as Carmina Burana and The Boxing Day Classics for Raymond Gubbay at the Royal Albert Hall.
Andrew Greenwood's recordings include two operatic recital discs with Lesley Garrett and Dennis O'Neill respectively.
