Born in The Netherlands, he initially graduated from the Department of Biology at the University of Amsterdam, before going on to study at both the Milanese Scuola di Musica and Curtis Institute, Philadelphia. His early performances as GOBINEAU in Menotti’s The Medium, DEMETRIUS in Midsummer Night’s Dream and PELLÉAS Pelléas et Mélisande (all for the Curtis Opera Theatre) quickly brought him to the attention of a wider public, and were followed by highly successful European debuts including PAPAGENO Die Zauberflöte, conducted by Ton Koopman, which won him Best Performance 1999.

Subsequent significant appearances have included OTTONE in Handel’s Agrippina with the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam (available on DVD), OTTOKAR Der Freischϋtz, PETE DAYTON in Neuwirth’s Lost Highway for English National Opera, FILIPPO Beatrice di Tenda in Rotterdam and PAPAGENO Die Zauberflöte for Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg. In addition he made a series of highly-successful appearances at De Vlaamse Opera including MARCO Gianni Schicci (directed by Robert Carsen), HARLEKIN Ariadne auf Naxos, and a critically-acclaimed performance in the title role in Hendrickx’s Achilleus.

A consummate recitalist, his concert appearances have included his debut at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam in Roussel’s Evocations, conducted by Marc Soustrot, and further significant appearances in Venice and Toronto.
