Stuart Patterson Tenor

An outstanding character artist, Stuart Patterson's international appearances have taken him to the opera houses in Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, Paris, Lyon and Turin. This season, he will make his Royal Opera House début in Massenet's Werther and at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in Shostakovitch'sThe Nose.

Stuart Patterson is renowned for his sensitivity and versatility as an artist. Most recent appearances have included the role of BLIND in Die Fledermaus for the Grand Théâtre de Genève and FLUTE in A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the Stadttheater Bern. Future performances include LA TASSE/LA REINETTE/LE VIEILLARD (l'Enfant et les Sortilèges) and MONOSTATOS (Zauberflöte) in Lausanne, MIME (Siegfried) in Lübeck, ABATE/INCREDIBILE (Andrea Chénier) in Geneva, MAESTRO DI BALLO (Manon Lescaut) in Lyon.

Born Perthshire, Scotland, Stuart first studied singing in Glasgow. He then studied with David Pollard in London, Claudio Desderi in Florence and latterly, Peggy Bouveret in Paris. He settled in France in 1985. From 1989 to 1996 Stuart was a regular member of the Teatro Verdi di Pisa with roles including OTTAVIO, FERRANDO and BASILIO/CURZIO. The three Mozart-Da Ponte productions toured all over Italy, conducted by Claudio Desderi. He also sang LUCANO/VALLETTO (L'Incoronazione di Poppea), ULISSE/EURIMACO (Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria), REMENDADO (Carmen) and RAMIRO (La Cenerentola) in Pisa.

Other highlights have included DAMON in Handel's Acis and Galatea, Cavalli's La Didone (two productions, one at the Tramway, Glasgow, the other at the Opéra Comique, Paris), PEDRILLO in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, SEMPRONIO in Haydn's Lo Speziale, PÂRIS in Offenbach's La Belle Hélène, LE COQ in Stravinsky’s Renard, the TITLE ROLE in Milhaud’s Le Pauvre Matelot at the Opéra Comique, SELLEM The Rake's Progress and VATER MIGNON in Penderecki's Die Teufel von Loudun in Torino, HARLEKIN/SOLDAT in Der Kaiser von Atlantis by Ullmann, MIME in Siegfried at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City (in 2005, recorded for Mexican television).

More recently he was guest at the Bastille Opera in Orff’s Der Mond (ERZÄHLER), Nantes and Angers for STUMP in Golem (John Casken), Besançon for MAD WOMAN in Britten’s Curlew River, Lyon for SNOUT in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Bregenz for SANCHO PANSA in the Man of La Mancha, and the Berlin Staatsoper for GORO in Butterfly.

His debut in Switzerland was at the Grand Théâtre de Genève in Carlisle Floyd's Susannah (GLEATON). He has been invited many times to Lausanne for a variety of operas including Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi (GHERARDO), Shostakovitch's The Nose (several roles), Le Nozze di Figaro (CURZIO), Il Signor Bruschino (Commissario), and in Bern for Battistelli's La Prova d'Orchestra (Sindicalista). Amongst his recordings are Le Nozze di Figaro, conducted by Jean-Claude Malgoire and The Nose conducted by Armin Jordan.
