One of Europe’s most dynamic and influential directors, Dieter Kaegi’s recent triumphs have included Der Rosenkavalier for Bern and Marseille, I Puritani for Stadttheater Nürnberg (which will be revived in 2010) and Macbeth for Opera Ireland. A busy future schedule includes Lucio Silla for Opéra de Nice, (featuring Bruce Ford in the title-role) and The Cunning Little Vixen for Theater Lübeck, also in 2010.

Born in Zürich, he studied Musicology and German Literature there and in Paris. He enjoyed early success at ENO, Opernhaus Zürich and Düsseldorf, and was later latterly Director of Productions at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. Currently Artistic Director of Opera Ireland, Dieter has directed twelve highly-successful productions for the company.
Significant productions, that have led to defining the hallmark of Dieter Kaegi’s work, have included Der Rosenkavalier and Der Freischütz in Seattle and Monte Carlo, where he also directed superb interpretations of Tristan und Isolde and Aida. Further notable productions have included Fidelio, Idomeneo and Le nozze di Figaro in Copenhagen and Der Fliegende Holländer, Guillaume Tell, I Masnadieri, Aida and Rigoletto for Opére de Liège. For both Grand Théâtre de Genève and Houston Grand Opera he directed Entführung aus dem Serail and Roméo et Juliette, in addition to Anna Bolena for Opéra-Théâtre de Metz as well as Die Lustige Witwe, Bluebeard’s Castle and Martinu’s Ariane for l’Opéra national du Rhin, Strasbourg.
Other highlights include La fille du regiment for St. Gallen, Giovanna d’ Arco in Lübeck, Ariadne auf Naxos in Prague, Falstaff for the Montepulciano Festival, Till Eulenspiegel in Nantes et Angers, Carmen in Lisbon, Don Giovanni in Washington DC, Das Liebesverbot for the Wexford Festival and Semiramide for the Rossini Festival Pesaro, which was revived in both Madrid and Barcelona.
In 2008 Dieter Kaegi was awarded the title of Cavaliere by the Italian Government, in recognition of his remarkable achievements.
