One of Italy’s leading sopranos, Patrizia Cigna’s most recent and future engagements include the role of LA COLONNELLA in Salieri’s Il mondo alla rovescia at the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona (now available on the Dynamics label), as well as ELVIRA L’Italiana in Algeri at Teatro Comunale di Firenze and Teatro Regio di Torino.
Born in Volterra, she studied with Jolanda Meneguzzer and then graduated cum laude at the Conservatory Luigi Cherubini in Florence under the guidance of Maria Grazia Germani.
She made her debut in 1993 at the Teatro Verdi in Pisa with the role of JULIETTE BROOK in Britten’s The Little Sweep. Since then her engagements have included SERPINA La Serva Padrona in Santander, DESPINA and NORINA Don Pasquale for Wexford Opera alongside Juan Diego Florez, BARBARINA for Teatro Regio di Torino, SERVILIA La Clemenza di Tito in Ferrara, DIE KÖNIGIN DER NACHT for Nationale Reisopera Enschede and Festival Avanches, ADINA in São Paulo, Alicante and Trieste, FORTUNA/VENERE L’Incoronazione di Poppea in Reggio Emilia, ILIA Idomeneo in Bari. In addition, she appeared in the title role Lucia di Lammermoor in Murcia, Spain, MUSETTA at Torre del Lago, GILDA Rigoletto in Rome.
Highlights of her career include appearances with conductors such as Vladimir Jurowsky, Lù Jia, Arnold Bosman, Ton Koopman, Daniele Gatti, Jonathan Webb, Paolo Olmi, Daniel Oren, Zubin Mehta, Alberto Zedda, and with directors such as Lorenzo Mariani, Michele Placido, Denis Krief, Stefano Vizioli, Pier Luigi Pizzi.
Other operatic engagements have included AMENAIDE Tancredi at Teatro Malibran in Venice, Teatro Comunale di Ferrara, and Teatro Valli in Reggio Emilia, MICAELA Carmen and ANNA Nabucco at the Arena di Verona, OSCAR Un Ballo in Maschera in Turin and VIOLETTA La Traviata in Lithuania.
Patrizia Cigna also performed and recorded rare opera repertoire, including Meyerbeer’s L’Etoile du Nord, Scarlatti’s La Dirindina, Donizetti’s Il Paria and La Romanziera e l’Uomo Nero.
