Northern Irish baritone Ben McAteer’s future and recent highlights include FALKE Die Fledermaus with Irish National Opera and Grange Festival, SIR WALTER RALEIGH in The Critic at Wexford Festival, and performances of Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater with Marin Alsop and the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice and Brussels. He received critical acclaim as PANGLOSS in Candide with Alsop at the Theater an der Wien and will return there next season to sing MAD HATTER/DUCK in Unsuk Chin’s Alice in Wonderland . Ben also made his debut with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra this season, performing Carmina Burana, and he returned to Belfast to sing Elijah with the Ulster Orchestra. Other recent engagements include a revival of English National Opera’s Iolanthe as the EARL OF MOUNTARARAT, THE GRAND INQUISITOR in The Gondoliers, and KING PARAMOUNT in Utopia Limited for Scottish Opera.

At Irish National Opera, he performed as MALATESTA in Don Pasquale, COUNT ALMAVIVA in Le Nozze di Figaro, SCHAUNARD in La Bohème, MARCHESE D’OBIGNY in La Traviata, and BLAZES in The Lighthouse.

Other operatic roles to date include FIGARO in Le Nozze di Figaro for Scottish Opera, FATHER in Hansel and Gretel for English National Opera at Regents Park Open Air Theatre, GORYANCHIKOV in The House of the Dead for Welsh National Opera, EISENSTEIN in Die Fledermaus, and PAPAGENO in The Magic Flute for Northern Ireland Opera.

Recent concert work includes Candide and Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri with the Hamburg Symphoniker, Haydn’s Creation with Daniele Rustioni and the Ulster Orchestra, and a concert performance of Die Tote Stadt with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland.

Ben features on a number of recent CD releases, including Maltworms & Milkmaids, a collection of orchestral songs by Peter Warlock with the BBC Concert Orchestra; a new recording of La Bohème from Irish National Opera; and a collection of newly discovered songs by Irish composer Ina Boyle.
