Winner of the 2016 International Opera Award for Young Director Fabio Ceresa’s engagements in current and future seasons include Orlanda finto pazzo National Opera of Korea, Rigoletto, Guillaume Tell and Cavalleria Rusticana / Pagliacci Theater Kiel, La Clemenza di Tito Opera de Lausanne, Un ballo in maschera Hungarian National Opera and Donizetti’s Maria di Rudenz for Wexford Festival Opera.

Born in 1981, Fabio made his debut as director in 2010 with Madama Butterfly for the Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini in Jesi. In 2012 he staged for Opera Lombardia a new production of La Traviata and was the director and dramaturge for Luigi Rossi’s Orfeo for the Valle d’Itria Festival, where he was subsequently re-invited the year after to stage Giovanna d’Arco. In 2014 he directed Tosca at Teatro Coccia in Novara, and Madama Butterfly at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence. In 2015 He created a new co-production of I Puritani for Florence and Teatro Regio di Torino, as well as a new Madama Butterfly for Florence and Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari. He also made his debut at Wexford Festival Opera staging Mascagni’s Guglielmo Ratcliff.

As well as directing, Fabio works intensely as librettist. Together with Marco Tutino, he wrote La Ciociara, commissioned by San Francisco Opera, published for Sonzogno Editions and performed in 2015. He has written the libretto for Daniele Zanettovich’s Marco Polo, published by Ed. Musicali Pizzicato and performed in 2014 at Teatro Nazionale Fiume. Librettos for Daniela Terranova are entirely published by Suvini Zerboni. In 2010, the singspiel Re Tuono, set to music by Daniela Terranova, won the first prize of the competition Kinderszenen held by the Comitato Nazionale Italiano Musica (CIDIM); in 2011, the opera Mannaggia a Bubbà! won the first prize of the Gianni Bergamo Music Award. After the great success of Luigi Rossi’s Orfeo, the Paolo Grassi Foundation commissioned a new opera entitled Le falene for the 2013 season.

At Teatro alla Scala in Milan he has worked alongside some of the most important modern directors including Luca Ronconi, Deborah Warner, Patrice Chéreau, Dmitri Tcherniakov, Pierluigi Pizzi, Peter Stein, Eimuntas Nekrosius and Richard Jones. He has also participated in the restaging of historical productions by Giorgio Strehler, Franco Zeffirelli and Jean Pierre Ponnelle, both in in national and international tours.

He has collaborated with Marco Taralli, writing many works for Teatro Carlo Felice Genova, Teatro Comunale Bologna, Festival Monteverdi Cremona, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, Auditorium Parco della Musica and Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.
