Music director of Scottish Opera from the 15/16 season, Stuart Stratford’s most recent credits with the company include a new production of Jenůfa and, this season, Rusalka. He will conduct and curate a series of concerts with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera featuring soloists such as Iain Paterson, Kate Royal and Ioan Hotea. Stuart is a sought after guest conductor at opera companies throughout the UK including many appearances at Opera North, where he conducts The Barber of Seville this season, Opera Holland ParkBirmingham Opera Company, Welsh National Opera and English National Opera, where he conducted a highly acclaimed Satyagraha.

International engagements have taken him in recent seasons to Musica Aeterna Perm, Hong Kong, the Theater St Gallen and the Finnish National Opera and he appears regularly with national orchestras including the LPO, the Philharmonia, CLS and the Manchester Camerata. This season sees his debut for West Australian Opera with L’elisir d’amore.

Recent concert work has included performances with Sinfonia Viva, concerts at the International Music Festival in Cartagena with the City of London SinfoniaMusica Aeterna in Perm, Russia, and a series of family and 'Funharmonics' concerts at the Barbican, Festival and Queen Elizabeth Halls with London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Recent opera engagements include Khovanschina Birmingham Opera Company, Calixto Bieito’s production of Don Giovanni English National Opera; Doctor Atomic Finnish National Opera; Un ballo in maschera Theater St. Gallen; A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Jonathan Dove’s Swanhunter Opera North; and Lucia di Lammermoor, Eugene Onegin, The Queen of Spades, La Fanciulla del West, Jenufa, Iolanta, Katya Kabanova, La Forza del Destino, L'Amico Fritz, Rigoletto, Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Opera Holland Park. He conducted The Turn of the Screw, Falstaff and Pagliacci for English Touring Opera, La Bohème (Francesca Zambello) Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall, Sibelius’ The Maiden in the Tower, Orfeo et Euridice and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Kashchei the Immortal Buxton Festival, Candide (Graham Vick) Birmingham Opera Company.

Stuart has conducted several premieres at the Almeida Opera Festival: Tobias and the Angel (Dove), Ion (Param Vir), Kantan (Goehr), L'Altra Euridice (Dove), Ariadne (Langer) and The Embalmer (Batistelli).

Recordings include Mercadante’s I Normanni a Parigi (Philharmonia Orchestra, Opera Rara) and the joint Channel 4 and Australian Broadcasting Corporation film opera, The Eternity Man (Australian Chamber Orchestra).

Stuart read music at Trinity College, Cambridge, studying conducting with David Parry and later in Russia, at the Saint Petersburg State Conservatoire with Ilya Aleksandrovich Musin. He was the Junior Fellow in Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music in 1999 and 2000.
